Tamara Klüver is an artist whose practice could superficially be described as feminist pop art pastiche with a Latin American colour palette. Within this framework she aims to address intricate topics pertaining to sexuality, gender roles, and sisterhood. These are personal to her and she has been frustrated searching for a means of expressing them. This led her to develop her mantra of making the political more personal - She aims to tell autobiographical stories about her experiences with womanhood that she positions adjacent to and in the midst of broader societal issues. This personal element has brought depth and intimacy.
Producing this work has helped her have a sense of humor about her experiences and hopes to share means of catharsis with anyone who can relate. She appropriates the bold aesthetic and transparent format of propaganda posters as she appreciates the retro imagery and wants to explore these issues in an anachronistic historical context. Her use of multiple mediums alongside painting developed out of her appreciation for photography, videography and collage. They can interact with each other to produce an image greater than the sum of its parts, just as the senses combined can produce an experience beyond straightforward sight or sound. She feels that artists should not be limited to a single medium, especially as the boundaries of painting are always evolving.
